Update PCs
Regular PC updates are the key to keeping them running smoothly and reliably. You don’t have to be a hardcore techie, either. Most updates pretty much run themselves and just need you to get them started.
The basic steps are the same for public and staff PCs with one major difference. Public PCs have Deep Freeze to ensure that changes patrons make do not get saved. To do updates on a public PC, you must first turn off Deep Freeze or it will also stop the updates.
Here are some step-by-step instructions for the basic updates you need to keep your PCs happy and healthy. They may seem like a lot, but trust us--it looks harder than it actually is.
Turn OFF Deep Freeze
Login as Administrator (CTRL+ALT+DELETE and choose Sign Out, then sign on as Administrator)
For Envisionware sites, press CTRL and right click on the Envisionware logo in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Then sign on with your Envisionware staff account and select Access Desktop. (Breaking Past the Login Screen)
Holding down the Shift key, double click on the polar bear (deep freeze) icon by the clock
It will ask you for a password, use your Administrator password
Choose Boot Thawed, then hit Apply and reboot
Once the computer comes back up, login as Administrator and make sure there is a red X by the polar bear icon
Updating Windows
Go to Settings
Click on Update & Security (win 10) or Windows Update (win 11)
Click the Check for Updates button
The computer will now check for any updates
When it finds updates Windows will then download and install the updates
When Windows has finished installing the update, it may ask you to restart, click the Restart button and let the computer reboot and configure the update
Go back to the updates window and click pause updates 5 times, this will pause updates for about a month, so it doesn’t try to do updates while frozen.
Reboot the PC again, as windows updates sometimes takes multiple reboots to finish configuring updates
If your Windows updates give you the “Hi, we’ve got a few updates for your PC .... “ message, you will absolutely need to follow the Log in as a Patron step before turning Deep Freeze back on.
