How to Find a Call Number

Here are some suggestions for determining what Call Number to use when you are Adding Items to your collection:

• Check to see what other libraries are using

• Check the bibliographic record (send it to the MARC)  [From the bib record, press F10 --> MARC Editor → OK] If there is a call number listed, it will be in the 082 field and sometimes in a really old record, it is the 092 field.

• Go to your shelf and see where you have similar items.  

• Check Enterprise under the same subject, look at the record which will give you similar titles

• Look inside the book you are cataloging. Often, the copyright page of a book (opposite side of title page) will contain a Dewey Decimal number. You might see DDC or dc23 which indicate a Dewey call number
